Another year has gone by and spring is on the way again. Which also means Mother’s Day is approaching soon! We at EarthBits have decided that this year this day we will also celebrate Mother Nature and our beautiful natural world by championing better ways to celebrate this loving day in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.
Each present idea is not only a lovely way of saying I love you to mum, but also an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic, and an active solution to cut back on the unnecessary consumption and waste that this beloved celebration produces every year.
The usual most common presents usually gifted for Mother's Day are roses and chocolate. Our advice? Drop them this year and show Mother Earth some green love by choosing eco-friendly, plastic-free products instead.
Mother’s day is a day that means a lot to me. I am a mum myself, and my first daughter was actually born on Mother's Day, so it has a special place in my heart. I love to celebrate motherhood and family love, but I am also aware that this celebration also comes with a lot of waste and plastic. Most people end up gifting their mums chocolate or flowers, without realising what a terrible impact they have on the environment. In the UK, Mother’s day usually falls in March, which is still a very cold month and temperatures tend to still be quite chilly.
This means that 90% of the flowers that are available for sale in the UK around this time have all been imported from other countries, usually quite far away (South America or China). This has a very real impact on the environment, as these long journeys produce a lot of carbon while on their way to our local florist or flower section at a store. So all these beautiful bunches of flowers turn out to be pretty environmentally-unfriendly unless locally grown.
Big brands that make chocolate are also guilty of unethical practices. It has been estimated that the principal chocolate manufacturers in the world get their cocoa powder supplies mainly from 2 country: Ghana and the Ivory Cost. What is happening there is that the greed of these multinationals to produce more and more cocoa has turned the indigenous forest into cocoa plantations, and consequently wiping out the normal habitat where chimps and other wildlife would normally thrive.
However, as with many other celebrations, there are sustainable ways to celebrate motherly love, from naturally made soaps to kitchen compostable brushes, coconut bowls, eco-sponges and reusable makeup pads. Just make sure to choose sustainable gifts and show the planet you love it too!
To help with some better eco-friendly gift ideas, we have created our ultimate Mother’s day gift for a greener “I love you mum” day! There will definitely be something for everybody.
